Project Spotlight: Publix #1885 at Chancellor Crossing – A Complex Canopy Installation Built for Business
Canopy Installation at Chancellor Crossing, Fredericksburg VA
Awnings by Bigley & Hogshire is proud to announce the successful completion of the canopy installation for Publix #1885 at Chancellor Crossing, a prominent new commercial development located at 5980 Plank Road in Fredericksburg, Virginia. This project, led by the general contracting & commercial construction professionals at EDC and supported by a team of trusted subcontractors, represents another successful partnership between our company, Awnings by Bigley & Hogshire, and a commercial construction leader dedicated to quality and precision.
Over a Century of Shade Solutions
Founded in 1898 and based in Hampton Roads, Va, Awnings by Bigley & Hogshire has over a century of experience delivering high-performance shade and canopy solutions to commercial clients across the East Coast. We specialize in engineered, code-compliant, and visually striking canopy systems that elevate the built environment, supporting general contractors, developers, and architects from project design to final installation.
Turnkey Canopy Solutions for a Growing Development
For the Chancellor Crossing development, we were brought on board to provide turnkey canopy solutions for multiple buildings in the complex. The centerpiece of the site is the new Publix Supermarket, supported by additional retail tenants in adjacent buildings. As with any commercial build, timelines, logistics, and coordination across trades were essential, and our team, as always, delivered.
Scope of Work: 26 Custom Canopies Across the Site
Awnings by Bigley & Hogshire was tasked with designing, fabricating, and installing a diverse range of commercial canopy systems throughout the Chancellor Crossing site. This comprehensive scope included 26 architectural canopies strategically placed across multiple buildings within the development, each tailored to meet both structural demands and the visual goals of the project.
Overhead Support Canopies: Streamlined Style
Among the installed systems were 7 Overhead Support Canopies, selected for their clean, streamlined appearance and ability to provide shade without compromising sightlines at retail entry points. These are a preferred option for commercial shopping centers seeking modern, open-faced designs that complement storefront glass and signage.
Cantilevered Canopies: Ease of Access, Engineered to Last
The bulk of the installation featured 16 Cantilevered Canopies, including a custom-engineered L-shaped configuration. These are a staple in commercial shade solutions, providing generous coverage while maintaining unobstructed walkways, particularly valuable in retail and mixed-use spaces where both aesthetics and pedestrian flow are essential.
Post Supported Canopies: Foundations of Long-Lasting Performance
In addition, we installed 3 Post-Supported Canopies, engineered to deliver long-lasting performance with direct load transfer into the foundation—ideal for high-traffic access points and exterior walkways.
Our Canopy Solutions: Excellence That Makes an Impact
Altogether, the installation totaled over 4,150 square feet of shade coverage, showcasing our commitment to large-scale custom canopy fabrication with precision, durability, and architectural appeal. Each element of the system was fabricated in-house at our Hampton Roads facility, allowing us to maintain tight control over quality, finish, and delivery timelines.
Built for Commercial Scale, Designed for Flexibility
Whether it’s a grocery anchor, a retail plaza, or a mixed-use site, shade and weather protection are integral parts of the customer experience – and a visible reflection of the project’s quality. Our role in Chancellor Crossing was to bring form and function together: To deliver not just protection from the elements, but a visually cohesive streetscape that enhances the value of every storefront.
General contractors and developers choose Awnings by Bigley & Hogshire because we bring more than just fabrication capabilities – we bring strategic support, field coordination, and an understanding of what it takes to work on active job sites. With strict adherence to construction schedules, site safety, and communication protocols, we operate as a true partner to your build team, not just a vendor.
